Episode 2

What is production design?

In our second episode on Visual Storytelling, we look at another critical element to the visual story: production design.

We'll be exploring the ways production designers work with directors, cinematographers, and their teams, to create visual that convey meaning and leave a lasting impression with audiences.

We break down the three elements production design powerfully communicates to an audience: Mood, character, and theme.

Watch the video to find out how the greatest visual storytellers go beyond the script by going deeper into defining "what is production design" through these three elements.

Production Design Film Set

Production design is the arrangement and selection of elements in the frame.

What is Production Design communicating?

1. Mood

The first element production design communicates is mood. What is production design if not a method for communicating how the scene is supposed to "feel". Scary? Exciting? Funny? Light? However you wish to define the mood for the moment in words, you'll more importantly have to define it in terms of production design elements.

2. Character

In a screenplay you'll often find a brief character description when a character is first introduced. In a completed movie, or series, there is no room for that. Instead it has to be communicated through a characters choices, but also through production design. What is production design? It's partly how characters define themselves with the spaces they occupy. How you reveal character with set decorating, and props?

3. Theme

Great production designers work in concert with a project's director to define and highlight the story's themes. Audiences may not grasp every line uttered in a visual story - but the images have the power to communicate much more, and truly stay with them. What is production design if it isn't actively expressing theme through the art department?
