Movie Script Writing Software FAQs
Movie script writing basics explained
Yes, ChatGPT can help you write a script. Or at least get you started with some basic ideas, an outline, etc. If you want to end up with an industry-standard screenplay, you'll need to copy/paste it out of ChatGPT and import it into a program like StudioBinder to finesse the formatting.
There is something referred to in screenwriting as "the 3 C's." This is a helpful shorthand for "concept," "character," and "conflict," which represent the foundational elements in every good screenplay.
It's certainly possible to write a script in Google Docs. But the trouble is the formatting. Industry-standard screenplay formatting is very particular and while there are guides and templates you can find online for writing in Google Docs, it will still be a lot of extra work to format every page manually.
Most people agree that the "golden rule of screenwriting" is something called "show, don't tell." Basically, this means that it is better to "show" something happening than to simply "tell" the audience that it is happening. For example, if there is an alcoholic character, it would be better to show them drinking heavily rather than to have them say, "I'm an alcoholic" in the dialogue.
Readability is an important aspect to screenwriting. Unlike a novel when the pages of descriptive text are necessary, screenplays should read much leaner and quicker. Therefore, the "3-line rule" says that no bit of action/description should be longer than three lines in a row. If you have six lines for example, add an extra blank link in the middle to break it up.
