Movie Script Maker FAQs
Movie scriptwriting basics explained
The average salary for a screenwriter is $50,000 to $70,000 per year but that number can go up into the seven digit salaries for high-profile writers and projects.
Every writer can follow these steps regardless of your experience, genre, or the scope of your script.
- Brainstorm — put all your ideas down on paper.
- Outline — organize those ideas in a summary of your story.
- Write — start writing individual scenes.
- Get Feedback — share your work and get notes.
- Rewrite — repeat steps 4 and 5 as needed.
The quality of a screenplay is subjective, of course, but most people agree that a good movie script should contain the following elements:
- Concept — the idea itself should be interesting and engaging.
- Characters — compelling characters who are also sympathetic.
- Conflict — formidable challenges to the characters.
Depending on your skill level and the quality of your idea, writing a script can take anywhere between 1 to 6 months. If the idea works and everything falls into place it could take just a few weeks. If the idea works but only after a long period of trial and error, you can expect it to take months.
Screenplay sales on the independent, non-union side might sell for $10,000 to $50,000. On the union studio side, it could be $100,000 to $1,000,000.
In theory, you can write a screenplay in Microsoft Word. If you wanted to properly format the script to meet industry standards, there are templates and guides online that you can use but you're still responsible for the formatting yourself. If you use a movie script maker like StudioBinder, the formatting is applied automatically.
