Shot Listing FAQs
Shot listing basics explained
A shot list is exactly what it sounds like: a list of shots you plan to get during production. It serves a dual purpose of helping get the vision for the scene down on paper and by becoming a checklist on set to make sure all necessary shots have been completed.
First, read your script and decide how many shots you'll need for a scene, and what those shots would be. Make a list of those shots, including details like lenses, camera movement, any special equipment you might need, etc. Then put your shot list into the order in which you'll shoot the shots during production. That's it!
In general, most shot lists look like a filled-out spreadsheet, where each row is a different shot, and each column is dedicated to a different type of detail like shot size, frame rate, lighting setup, etc.
Similar to film or music videos, a photography shot list is a working document that lists all the desired shots for the day. In photography, each shot might focus on a different pose, outfit, location, etc.
You can create a shot list the traditional way of using pen and paper, or you can use a more modern approach with a shot list creator like StudioBinder, which gives you full flexibility in the design, layout, and arrangement of your shot list.
In most productions, a director creates the original shot list. This might be refined in collaboration with the cinematographer, editor, and/or 1st AD, but it is the director who kickstarts the process.
From your script, start with just a single scene and decide what shots you'll need or want to get. This list becomes your shot list. When you use a shot list creator like StudioBinder, once you import your script, each scene is automatically given a blank shot list so you can hit the ground running.
