Shot List FAQs
Shotlisting basics explained
The basic process of building a shot list is quite simple: make a list of all the shots you need for a scene. This not only helps get your vision down on paper, but it also aids in scheduling each shoot day.
- Read your script and visualize each shot
- Make a list of shots, including a description and details
- Order the shots in order of how they'll be shot
- Send your list to your DP and 1st AD for feedback and scheduling
There are two ways to create a shot list: by hand or with shot list software. The traditional pen and paper method is more immediate and tactile, but it lacks the flexibility of a dedicated shot list maker like StudioBinder when changes are needed.
A shot list template is a blank list for you to fill out with your desired shots for a scene. It will most likely look like a spreadsheet where you can fill in details like the scene and shot numbers, shot size, camera movement, camera lenses, notes for VFX, etc.
Shot lists aren't necessary, but they are highly recommended. Not only do they help creators visualize what they need for each scene, it also function as a checklist on set to help ensure you get all the coverage you need.
While there is no rule about shot list format, the most important thing to remember is clarity and organization. As a "list," imagine a spreadsheet-style layout with a different row for each shot. It's up to you to decide how many columns to include, depending on how detailed or streamlined you want the shot list to be.
When planning your shot list, it's usually best to avoid designating shots with letters that resemble numbers. For example, the letter "O" could easily be mistaken for a zero.
Photoshoots also use shot lists to help organize and strategize. Each shot in the list could be a different pose, outfit, location, lighting setup, etc., so that the photographer, agency, model, and everyone else know the plan for the shoot.
In film, the shot list is usually built by the director, who will create a sort of "wish list" for their shots. They might also collaborate with the cinematographer and perhaps the editor to make sure all the proper coverage needed will be included.
