Making a film storyboard only requires a few simple steps:
- Use one of the many storyboarding programs available.
- Choose a storyboard template.
- Upload your images and add them to your frames.
- Add descriptions, annotations, and notes.
- Print a PDF or email your digital storyboards.
Storyboards are used all the time in animation, first as still images, then as animatics. This allows for an organic evolution toward the finished animation.
- The animator sketches out the rough design or layout of each shot.
- These sketches go through a few rounds of notes and revisions between the director and the animators.
- The storyboard is often turned into an animatic, which is a roughly animated version with dialogue, sound effects, or music. This allows them to refine the timing, performances, actions, etc.
- Once it is approved, the animators work on the final animations.
Most storyboard programs offer a free version of the software. Typically, the free version offers basic functionality to test it out. But the paid plan tiers will include much more comprehensive and professional tools.
