Video Game Script FAQs
Video game scripting basics explained
For obvious reasons, writing a video game screenplay is a lot different than writing a film screenplay. There is overlap, however, especially in the cut scenes, which can be formatted the same as a film. But for the standard game play, how you format it is completely up to you.
Once you've landed on the basic premise of your game and the general flow from one level to the next, writing the screenplay looks exactly like writing a film. Action/description lines, followed by dialogue and transitions. Just like a movie, the video game screenplay should have a main objective, compelling characters, and formidable obstacles along the way.
While there is no set path to become a video game writer, there are some steps you can take toward that direction. First and foremost, you should have a firm grasp on storytelling mechanics so read everything you can and study the form outside of games. Second, you should also be fluent in game play and game design because your main goal as a video game writer is to meld the two mediums together. To get a video game writing job, you should get yourself a job somewhere at the production company, learn the business from the inside, and work your way up.
