Film Production Software FAQs
Film production basics explained
There is filmmaking software for nearly every stage of the film production process. Most are focused on a single portion of that process (e.g., screenwriting, storyboards, call sheets, etc.) but StudioBinder bundles all of those and more into a single application.
The 12 Hour Rule basically states that there needs to be a minimum of 12 hours between the end of a shooting day and the beginning of the next shooting day. This is also called "turnaround time."
On average, a film crew can get 20-30 shots in a day. Of course, depending on the size of the crew, the intricacies of the shots themselves, etc. have a big impact on how many shots can be taken.
Perseverance is the most important filmmaking skill because filmmaking is an arduous process, taking months or even years, with challenges at every turn. You may have great creative and technical skills but if you're not patient and dedicated, the job can be difficult.
The Rule of Thirds in filmmaking is related to how a shot is composed in the frame. If you divide your frame into three vertical and three horizontal sections (making a grid of 9), the rule says that you should place the most important elements of the shot along those lines and where they intersect. This helps create a balanced and aesthetically pleasing composition.
The Golden Ratio in film is related to how frames can be composed. It comes a mathematical formula and divides rectangles into a ratio of 1.61:1, creating smaller and smaller rectangles. If you then drew a curved line through the corners of each rectangle, you will achieve a graceful and ever shrinking curve.
