When Vanya’s parents send thugs to break up the marriage, Vanya disappears. The thugs, including Igor (Yura Borisov), pull Ani through a whirlwind search for her missing husband.

At the end of this farcical chase, Ani finds some kind of closure… but it’s not the satisfying ending that an audience might want. We’re left with questions about her future, and how she’s feeling about her experience.

At the end of the film, Anora’s marriage to Ivan gets annulled by Vanya’s parents. Ani gets a payout of $10,000, and Igor is instructed to bring her back to her apartment.

Ani and Igor banter along the way, showing chemistry between the two of them. But Ani makes it clear that she doesn’t trust him, clearly sees him as just a thug.

Then, outside of her apartment, he gives her the wedding ring that his boss had taken from her. After that genuine gesture of kindness, she starts to have sex with him, only to break down in tears halfway through. And that’s where Baker chooses to end the film.

There’s a lot going on in this final scene, most of it unspoken. Let’s begin our breakdown by looking at how it appears in Sean Baker’s screenplay, versus the final film.

What Happens Moment by Moment

It starts in Igor’s car idling outside of Anora’s apartment, with them sitting in silence. It’s clear she still doesn’t trust him. She’s still processing everything she went through.

After that, a number of beats happen without dialogue:

• Ani opens the door to get out.
• Igor stops her, gives her back the wedding ring.
• He gets out of the car, takes her luggage up the stairs to her apartment, while she considers what he just did.
• Noticing she’s not getting out of the car, he comes back.
• She begins small talk, tells him he doesn’t like his car.
• She removes her jacket, sits on his lap and begins to have sex with him. He does not protest.
• He tries to kiss her. She resists, slapping him.
• The mood broken, he pulls her into a hug as she cries.

The Car Scene & Ani’s Breakdown

Looking at the shooting script, we notice a few differences between what’s in the finished film. The overall arc of the scene is the same: it starts as a melancholy farewell, turns into banter, then seduction, then emotional breakdown. But what doesn’t appear in the script is the beat where Igor attempts to kiss Ani. Instead, the script focuses on the suddenness of her breakdown, through Igor’s startled dialogue (which was cut from the film):

Without the dialogue, the scene becomes more tender… and also more emotionally charged. We’re invited to wonder why Ani does any of this: first seducing Igor, then breaking down in his arms.

But where does Anora herself fit into all of this? She starts the film as a pure hustler – someone who sees sex as a commodity. Her relationship to Vanya is transactional: he gets access to her body, she gets access to his wealth. Their arrangement starts with $15,000 for a week of exclusivity, then it becomes marriage, which she takes a lot more seriously. Marriage is a new beginning for her, not just another gig. Once they marry, she gets to live a carefree dream life in a luxurious mansion.

In the second half of the film, with Vanya on the run, Anora’s hold on this relationship becomes increasingly desperate. She insists that she and Vanya are in love, that their marriage is not a fraud. But when they find Ivan, he’s hiding in her former strip club as if nothing happened.

At this moment, Ani realizes that Vanya wasn’t really committed to their marriage. He just married her to defy his parents.

Thematic Analysis

Sean Baker and his collaborators have described Anora as a “Cinderella Story”, referring to a specific subgenre of fairy tale: A mistreated young woman achieving her dreams of love and success through a “Prince” figure. She even says after she marries Vanya that she wants to have her honeymoon at the Cinderella Suite in Disneyworld.

Anora complicates the Cinderella story by giving Ani a Prince who does not remotely live up to the fairy tale ideal. Vanya is immature, impulsive, and ultimately spineless. He gives Ani what she wants, but when his parents come to America to annul the marriage, he doesn’t have the courage to defend his new bride. This reveals the fantasy romance for what it was: just a fantasy.

But as one Prince fades away, another appears. Throughout the second half of the film, Igor has been present as a background character, among the henchmen who are tasked with dissolving Ivan’s marriage. Igor’s reluctance sets him apart right away – he has no stake in the Zakharov family drama. But as the story goes along, we see small gestures of kindness from him that show he’s a more genuine person than Ivan ever was, culminating in the moment where he gives Ani back the wedding ring: not as payment for anything or a proposal, but because she deserves respect.

Throughout her marriage, Ani acts like a member of the elite. By marrying Ivan, she’s now rich. But in the end, the Zakharov family will never see her as one of their own. The themes of class become abundantly clear when she attempts to speak to Galina Zakharov, only to be brushed off.

Ultimately, she has more in common with goons like Igor, because they’re at the mercy of the people with money.

Symbolism in the Ending

The wedding ring symbolizes a sort of hope for her. It was once her escape from a life of exhausting hustling into a sort of comfort. When she fights back against Igor and the other henchmen, it becomes a weapon for her. She punches Igor, cutting his face with the diamond. Later in the same struggle, Igor’s boss confiscates it, saying that it is Zakharov property.

When Igor gives it back, it’s a complex gesture of respect. She pays him back the only way she knows how – with sex – but ultimately can’t follow through because of the emotional journey she’s been on.

Sean Baker says that the ending is supposed to be open to interpretation. Ani stopping Igor from kissing her is a crucial way of her maintaining control, and not allowing herself to be hurt again.

In an IndieWire interview, Baker said, “[the ending is] designed in a way that allows for different interpretations (...) I do see it more of it being about her and not really something that she’s giving to him but something in which she’s now regaining the power that she lost entirely throughout this journey. We’re playing with different themes, and one of them is consent, and when he then tries to kiss her in that moment, that’s crossing a line for her. It’s like, ‘No, I’m in control of this moment.'”

One of Baker’s key influences for Anora is Federico Fellini’s Nights of Cambiria (1957). It tells the story of a sex worker who struggles to find happiness in 1950s Rome. She wants love, but in the end, only finds heartbreak.

In the final moments of the film she has a moment of joy, dancing with young people on the street, but a tear rolling down her cheek shows the pain she still feels. Her heart is still broken, though she’s determined to soldier on.

Like Cambiria, Ani wants to live a life beyond the relentless hustle to make money. Her life with Vanya almost became her escape, but when that fell apart, she had no time to mourn it until the very final moments of the film.

Anora was a smashing success, winning universal acclaim and multiple Oscars. But the ending continues to provoke discussion: Is it empowering to sex workers? Or is it a weaker Pretty Woman, reducing Ani to someone who needs to be saved by a White Knight?

It’s also possible to read the ending as a much darker one: Igor isn’t a white knight at all, just another man who will inevitably objectify her. Some critics identify her refusal to kiss him as the point of the scene. There is no romance in her future, just more empty transactions.
