But for our money, these are the best Disney Plus movies you can watch tonight.

DISNEY PLUS MOVIE LIST FOR KIDS

Hidden Figures

Hidden Figures  •  Trailer

Movies have the power to shine a light on issues people may be unaware of. Hidden Figures highlights the segregation that was prevalent at NASA in the lead-up to Project Mercury. The film centers on three Black women as they lead their colleagues to new scientific heights. While there are some historical inaccuracies, such as Kevin Costner’s character not even existing, hopefully the film encourages people to research more into this historical moment.

Critic Review Highlight

Hidden Figures has stellar performances and outstanding cinematography. While it feels Oscar-baity at times, its strengths outweigh its faults.

Mulan

Mulan  •  Trailer

What makes the 1998 Mulan so much better than the live-action version? There are a lot of potential answers to this question. But one answer could be in how the original, Mulan is just a normal girl trying to do the right thing. She struggles and develops as an individual after joining the Imperial Army. In the 2020 version, Mulan is magical… for some reason. There’s no growth because she’s already as powerful as she possibly could be. Fortunately, the remake’s presence doesn’t take away from the wonderful original.

EXCELLENT MOVIES ON DISNEY PLUS

Mary Poppins

Mary Poppins  •  Trailer

Combining live-action with animation is no easy feat. But even back in 1964, Disney was up for the challenge. To accomplish this, the film relied heavily on rotoscoping. Mattes were created via Sodium Vapor screens. Extensive wire work required the film’s VFX team to take them out of the final frame. It was a marvel at the time, and one in which such care and precision is tough to replicate today.

BEST DISNEY PLUS MOVIES

Critic Review Highlight

Mary Poppins still stands up as a perfect family film. The songs are just as timeless now as they were in the ‘60s.

GOOD DISNEY+ MOVIES

Saving Mr. Banks

Saving Mr. Banks  •  Trailer

Saving Mr. Banks makes some Disney-fied changes to the real story behind Mary Poppins. While the film shows P.L. Travers moved by the final product, she was actually angry upon seeing the finished film. But that doesn’t quite make for a happy ending. In this instance, the true story is far more dramatic than the film based on it.

BEST DISNEY PLUS MOVIES

Critic Review Highlight

Saving Mr. Banks is a great watch for fans of Mary Poppins. It may not always be historically accurate, but it does manage to shed a bit of a light on the tumultuous behind-the-scenes story of the film.

A Goofy Movie

A Goofy Movie  •  Trailer

A Goofy Movie does the impossible by giving emotional weight to Goofy. It shows him as a single dad raising his son who’s embarrassed by him as the two go on a road trip. The reason it’s likely resonated with audiences all these years later is because it invokes feelings everyone has experienced when they were a teen. It’s practically a universal feeling to be embarrassed by your parents, but it’s important to not let those feelings override your entire relationship. It’s still possible to find common ground, and your parents are often cooler than you realize.

BEST DISNEY PLUS MOVIES

Critic Review Highlight

A Goofy Movie is a classic for millennials. And it’s a great movie for people in that generation to introduce to their kids (before they become jaded teens like Max).

BEST SUPERHERO MOVIES ON DISNEY PLUS

X2

X2  •  Trailer

Superhero sequels tend to be more critically regarded than the first. Just look at The Dark Knight, Spider-Man 2, Captain America: The Winter Soldier, and X2. One reason for this can be attributed to needing to get through all of the characters and exposition. Superheroes require a lot of knowledge in terms of powers and world-building. Once all that is established, the filmmakers can simply focus on telling the best story possible. X2 can function as an allegory for various social issues while being a thrilling action adventure.

BEST DISNEY PLUS MOVIES

Critic Review Highlight

X2 has some superb action sequences. Yet it’s the quieter moments, such as Iceman “coming out” to his parents, that leave the greatest impact.

Hamilton

Hamilton  •  Trailer

Hamilton brings a 2016 performance with the original Broadway cast to the masses. The show won 11 Tonys and reignited people’s interest in musical theater. And you get a similarly thrilling experience watching a filmed version.

The way they filmed the show was to record two live performances and one where the camera crew could actually be onstage. Seeing the emotion on the actors’ faces makes you feel like you have a front row seat to the best show in town.

You don’t have to be a history buff to enjoy Hamilton. Even if you don’t normally like Broadway musicals, you’ll find something to latch onto with this one.

WHAT MOVIES CAN YOU WATCH ON DISNEY PLUS?

The Fault in Our Stars

The Fault in Our Stars  •  Trailer

The Fault in Our Stars follows two cancer patients who fall in love in a support group. It’s one of those films that raises the question: what’s the appeal of romantic tragedies? In the same vein as Romeo and Juliet, we know the story isn’t going to end well. We know we’re going to cry and feel bad by the end of it. But that may be why these stories continue to resonate. They teach us to appreciate the moment and cherish the ones we have for the short time we have them.

Big Hero 6  •  Trailer

The merging of Disney and Marvel would inevitably lead to an animated superhero film, and the result was Big Hero 6. It’s an underrated film in Disney’s modern canon. It stands on its own, telling a heartfelt superhero story without the need to connect it something bigger than what the movie needs to be.

Who Framed Roger Rabbit

Who Framed Roger Rabbit  •  Trailer

One of the most famous scenes in Who Framed Roger Rabbit almost didn’t happen. For the scene where Mickey Mouse and Bugs Bunny appear together, the studios would only license the characters if they had the same amount of screen time and same amount of dialogue.

It’s just one incredible scene in a movie that’s filled with them, and even all these years later, the animation is unmatched for the insane level of detail you’ll find. If you don’t believe us, just research the idea of “bumping the lamp.”

The Nightmare Before Christmas

The Nightmare Before Christmas  •  Trailer

The Nightmare Before Christmas originated from Tim Burton’s childhood. He was obsessed with holidays growing up because he felt it gave time more texture. He developed the idea for the story while working at Disney but was later fired. He went on to direct successes like Beetlejuice, and the chance to bring The Nightmare Before Christmas was rejuvenated. The One and Only Ivan

The One and Only Ivan  •  Trailer

The original book deals with some pretty heavy themes regarding animal imprisonment. The film functions as an interesting adaptation in how it kind of “Disney-fies” the source material to make it more family-friendly. But through it all, it’s still a tear-jerking affair with well-done CGI animals.

Timmy Failure  •  Trailer

Director Tom McCarthy went from the Oscar-winning drama Spotlight to a movie about a boy running a detective agency with a bear as a best friend. There are plenty of zany moments and deadpan jokes in this movie, but the characters and their emotions remain the focal point.

Lindsay Lohan’s character was originally written as goth. It would have made for an interesting dynamic as her mother takes on a completely different persona and one she’s entirely unfamiliar with.
