Must-watch movies on HBO

50. Mrs. Doubtfire (1993)

The Mrs. Doubtfire makeup took 3-4.5 hours every day

Just one of a bevy of memorable Robin Williams performances. Mrs. Doubtfire is fun for the whole family, and has a decent helping of heart to accompany the humor.

Best movies to watch on HBO

In Short

Mrs. Doubtfire is a classic for good reason. Let Robin Williams brighten your day.

Best movies on HBO Go

49. School of Rock (2003)

You’re not hardcore unless you live hardcore

The always entertaining Jack Black has perhaps never been as perfectly utilized as he was in School of Rock as a lazy failed musician who bluffs his way through teaching a music class. You could almost swear the role was tailor made to his talents and persona. If left to the wrong filmmaker, this is a concept that could have been gimmicky or even grating, but in the safe hands of Richard Linklater, School of Rock is an enjoyable film for the whole family.

Good movies on HBO now

In Short

A breezy family friendly film that the adults can enjoy just as much as the kids. The humor hits and the entire soundtrack is memorable.

Movies to watch on HBO

48. Midnight Special (2016)

Cast interview with the Build Series

One of two films made by Jeff Nichols to be released in 2016 alongside Loving (also on HBO-Go). Midnight Special is a heavier, more grounded take on the superhero origin story, and it’s a breath of fresh air if you’re feeling worn out with all of the massive, spectacle-driven superhero franchises. The only drawbacks are the third act, which goes a bit off the rails, and the simple fact that it doesn’t live up to Jeff Nichols’ early work like Take Shelter, or Shotgun Stories.

Best movies on HBO

In Short

Midnight Special is a different kind of superhero story that makes for a nice departure from the mainstream genre output.

Good movies on HBO

47. Living in Oblivion (1995)

Peter Dinklage rants about dwarves in dream sequences

Living in Oblivion is a low-budget gem from the mid-90s. Steve Buscemi headlines a cast packed with stars who were still on their way up at the time, including Catherine Keener and Peter Dinklage in his first film role ever. The film is a loving tribute to the world of indie filmmaking, and it’s one of the most authentic movies about making movies you’ll ever see. The low budget shows in places, but anyone with production experience is sure to love it.

Best movies on HBO now

In Short

Living in Oblivion is a love letter to low-budget filmmaking, and perfectly pays tribute to and skewers the craft in equal measure.

Movies on HBO

46. Little Shop of Horrors (1986)

He’s a mean green mother from outer space

This 1986 remake has completely eclipsed the original. Frank Oz of Muppets fame took a 1960 b-movie plot and turned it into a zany comedy musical for the ages. The songs are so catchy that they’re still regularly performed live in stage productions across the country.

Good movies on HBO now

In Short

Little Shop of Horrors is a timeless classic. This musical comedy is likely to please anyone and everyone.

Movies to watch on HBO

45. Team America: World Police (2004)

Making-of documentary, building the world

From South Park creators Matt Stone and Trey Parker came Team America: World Police. It’s a crass satire that takes aim at America and the rest of the world. Oh, and it happens to be made entirely with puppets. For some it will be too vulgar, but it is certainly funny and there is some intelligent social commentary underneath all of the poop jokes.

HBO movies on demand

In Short

If extreme vulgarity doesn’t turn you off, Team America: World Police might be right up your alley. Fans of South Park are sure to love it.

Movies on HBO

44. Fahrenheit 451 (2018)

Insights from the cast and crew

Time for an HBO original movie. Fahrenheit 451 might be the adaptation that George Orwell’s novel deserves, but there are some rather strong elements at play that make it worth watching. The visual style and production design are strong, Michael B. Jordan is good and Michael Shannon is excellent (as always). It’s in the adaptation department that this one falls flat.

Movies on HBO now

In Short

The strengths just barely make up for the shortcomings in this Orwell adaptation. Michael Shannon’s performance alone is enough to make this worth watching.

Good movies on HBO

43. The Little Stranger (2018)

Domhnall Gleeson and Ruth Wilson discuss their characters

The Little Stranger oddly flew under the radar upon its release, despite being a wonderfully acted period drama masquerading as a ghost film. The lukewarm reception may have been due to the film’s poor marketing which presented The Little Stranger as a horror film, when its true genre lies in the romance-drama category. The acting, editing, and cinematography are all top notch.

Movies on HBO right now

In Short

The Little Stranger is a strong romantic drama in disguise as a ghost film. It deserved more respect upon release, and now it has a chance to find its audience on HBO.

Best movies on HBO

42. The Others (2001)

The Others VFX breakdown

The Others is a 2001 ghost film with the spirit of 70s horror running through it. This throwback cultivates a strong, creepy atmosphere and is content to linger in quiet unease. The big scare moments are excellently executed, though they are too few and far between. The twist is rather predictable, but still makes for a different enough story to set it apart from similar stories.

Best movies on HBO right now

In Short

The Others is a solid ghost film that is heavy on atmosphere. Watch this one with the lights off.

41. Big (1988)

The classic piano scene

Big is a classic Tom Hanks comedy about a boy who wakes up in an adult’s body after making a wish on a Zoltar machine. It’s chock full of feel-good moments and heart-warming scenes. The romance he has with an adult woman is quite problematic when you stop and think about it, but that’s the only rough spot on this classic comedy.

Top movies on HBO

In Short

Big is a feel-good comedy with just the right amount of heart. Penny Marshall directed an instant classic.

40. Winter’s Bone (2010)

John Hawkes disappears into character as Teardrop

Debra Granik’s 2010 thriller, Winter’s Bone, is far more setting and character driven than much of the genre’s output. Winter’s Bone was the film that launched Jennifer Lawrence’s career, and just might contain what is still her best performance to date. The entire supporting cast is comprised of veteran character actors who turn in scene-stealing performances. John Hawkes, Garret Dillahunt, Sheryl Lee, and Dale Dicky all shine.

Best movies on HBO

In Short

Winter’s Bone is a dark thriller that thrives on a rich, textural setting and a compelling supporting cast.

Top movies on HBO

39. BlacKkKlansman (2018)

Spike Lee reflects on his career up to BlacKkKlansman

Spike Lee’s timely Ron Stallworth biopic served as a scathing criticism of modern-day racism despite its 70s setting. It’s a bit blunt, and marred by a few oddly-present technical issues on a camera and cinematography level, but the material is strong enough to overcome any weaknesses and then some.

HBO movies on demand

In Short

BlacKkKlansman is as funny as it is meaningful. It might beat you over the head with its message, but it’s a message that’s just as important now as it would’ve been during the time in which the actual events transpired.

Best movies on HBO Go

38. Unbreakable (2000)

Go behind the scenes of Unbreakable

Unbreakable is easily one of M. Night Shyamalan's best films; arguably his best. It’s a superhero film in disguise, a subversive take on the superman origin story. “What if superman didn’t know he was superman.” It’s an all around solid film, with the only weak spot being some awkward plotting in the third act and a couple extremely minor plot holes.

Movies on HBO

In Short

Unbreakable is an original take on the superhero origin story. One of M. Night’s best, long before the Eastrail 177 trilogy took form with the follow-ups Split and Glass.

Best movies on HBO right now

37. Cast Away (2000)

Wilsooooooon!

The now classic story of a Fedex worker who gets stranded on a deserted island. Tom Hanks gives a compelling one man show with little more than a volleyball to play off of. Robert Zemeckis’ last great film before becoming obsessed with uncanny-valley CG people.

Good movies on HBO

In Short

Cast Away takes a simple premise and executes it just about as well as you possibly could.

Best movies on HBO Go

36. Half Nelson (2006)

Video essay exploring theme and character in Half Nelson

Half Nelson is the crown jewel of the inner-city-school-teacher subgenre. It’s a heavy drama headlined by a showstopping Ryan Gosling. With audiences used to his heartthrob side in the likes of The Notebook, Gosling took on the challenging protagonist of Half Nelson, a strung-out crack addict barely holding his life together. It’s a great character and a great performance.

Best movies on HBO

In Short

Half Nelson stands out from its contemporaries with an interesting protagonist played to perfection by Ryan Gosling.

35. Die Hard With a Vengeance (1995)

The best way south is through the park

After the underwhelming Die Hard 2: Die Harder, the third entry in the iconic action series was a welcome return to form. A great villain found in Jeremy Irons and a great sidekick found in Samuel L. Jackson make for a worthy sequel to the original action classic.

Best movies to watch on HBO

In Short

Die Hard With a Vengeance is an easy pick for the second best of the long-running Die Hard franchise. Stands on it’s own with the help of an inventive plot and a memorable main baddie.

Best movies on HBO Go

34. Quadrophenia (1979)

Love Reign O’er Me

Quadrophenia is the film adaptation of The Who’s rock opera of the same name. The film is not content to rest on the quality of the music alone. Quadrophenia is a raw and emotional character study, and an examination of both lifestyle and class. It’s a war of 60s-70s subcultures; Mods VS Rockers, set to an iconic rock and roll soundtrack.

Best movies on HBO

In Short

Quadrophenia is a great film. You don’t need to be a fan of The Who to enjoy this subversive classic.

Movies on HBO now

33. True Lies (1994)

In depth making-of documentary

True Lies is one of Arnie’s best, and should rightfully be counted amongst James Cameron’s best movies as well. It’s an action classic with a great sense of humor and a better script that most of the era’s action fare received.

Best movies to watch on HBO

In Short

True Lies is a classic of both the action and comedy genres; full of memorable scenes and characters.

Best movies on HBO

32. Raising Arizona (1987)

Son, you got a panty on your head

Raising Arizona was the second feature film to come from the inimitable Coen Brothers. It is their goofiest romp by far as it follows a Nic Cage X Holly Hunter couple who take advantage of a rich family with more children than they need. Look for the over-the-top motorcycle riding, dynamite throwing villain, the dog-filled chase scene, and a great supporting role from John Goodman.

Best movies to watch on HBO

In Short

Raising Arizona is a wacky southern caper as only the Coen Brothers could pull off.

31. Gangs of New York (2002)

By the ancient laws of combat, we have met at this chosen ground

Gangs of New York is one of a handful of great Martin Scorsese gangster films. This one trades contemporary gangster life for an 1800s setting, and unleashes a ferocious Daniel Day Lewis as Bill the Butcher. It’s a little over-long, and it’s clear where the trimming could be done.

Best movies to watch on HBO

In Short

Gangs of New York could use some trimming, but remains a fun watch and a remarkable production.

Best movies on HBO Go

30. American Splendor (2003)

Picking the right lane is an art

American Splendor is the biopic of Harvey Pekar, the celebrated underground comic book maestro who created an autobiographical comic series of the same name. It’s a melancholy film with a good dose of humor to lighten the load. The film takes on a pseudo-documentary quality that makes it stand out amongst its peers.

Best movies to watch on HBO

In Short

American Splendor is a unique biopic with an interesting man as its focus and an excellent performance from Paul Giamatti.

Must-watch movies on HBO

29. La La Land (2016)

Behind the scenes featurette

Damien Chazelle’s follow up to Whiplash was just as music-centric, but traded a heavy tone for light, and traded a compelling villain, for a stirring romance. Capable of joy and sadness in equal measure, La La Land is a well-made musical throwback with a pair of world-class leading actors.

All HBO Movies

In Short

La La Land flies high on the charisma of its two leads and is sure to leave at least one song stuck in your head.

Must-watch movies on HBO

28. The Darjeeling Limited (2007)

The signature Wes Anderson slo-mo walk to acoustic rock

Sometimes unfairly labeled as Wes Anderson’s worst film, though in a filmography as impressive as his, that’s not too much of a blemish. The Darjeeling Limited is full of all the Wes Anderson staples from the cast and soundtrack to the cinematography and production design, and the third act takes a surprisingly emotional turn. Well worth watching.

Best movies to watch on HBO

In Short

The Darjeeling Limited is a surprisingly personal and emotional tale told through Wes Anderson’s signature style.

Must-watch movies on HBO

27. The Station Agent (2003)

Peter Dinklage’s breakout role

Best movies to watch on HBO

In Short

The Station Agent’s Finbar McBride gives Tyrion Lannister a run for his money for Peter Dinklage’s best performance. A trio of great characters played to perfection.

Must-watch movies on HBO

26. Casino Royale (2006)

Best parkour chase ever?

Daniel Craig’s first at-bat in the iconic role of James Bond was an instant highlight for the series. Martin Campbell of Goldeneye fame returned to usher in a new, grittier Bond to great effect. There’s more depth to the character than in most prior Bond films, and the action is excellent. Plus, this was the film that rocketed parkour into the zeitgeist.

Best movies to watch on HBO

In Short

A darker Bond, an excellent villain, and phenomenal action make Casino Royale a highlight of the iconic spy series.

Must-watch movies on HBO

25. Shutter Island (2010)

Enter the asylum in this BTS featurette

Martin Scorsese’s mystery/thriller is a deliciously dark adaptation of Dennis Lehane’s creepy novel. Scorsese furthers the insanity of the characters in subtle ways, like including intentional continuity errors. The all-encompassing atmosphere and effectively twisty narrative make Shutter Island a must watch.

Best movies to watch on HBO

In Short

Shutter Island is one of the best thrillers in recent memory. Rewards repeat viewings.

Must-watch movies on HBO

24. Glengarry Glen Ross (1992)

ABC: Always Be Closing!

A powerhouse cast takes on some of the sharpest dialogue ever written. David Mamet provided the screenplay for this adaptation of his own stage play of the same name. Glengarry Glen Ross shows its stage roots with under-whemling visual flair, but with dialogue this good, you don’t need to dress it up.

Best movies to watch on HBO

In Short

Glengarry Glen Ross has one of the sharpest scripts ever penned and an A-list cast to put it to good use.

Must-watch movies on HBO

23. A Woman Under the Influence

Gena Rowlands goes full throttle

A Woman Under the Influence is one of many collaborations between actress Gena Rowlands and her writer-director husband John Cassavetes. The first act’s pacing is a bit harsh, but stick with it and you’ll be rewarded with one of the most intense and emotionally raw performances ever committed to film from a fully unmasked Gena Rowlands. Peter Falk makes for an excellent foil to his troubled wife.

Best movies to watch on HBO

In Short

A Woman Under the Influence is a heavy watch guided by a deft hand behind the camera. Gena Rowlands is revelatory.

Must-watch movies on HBO

22. Grosse Pointe Blank (1997)

No! Not the Pulp Fiction cardboard cutout!

Grosse Pointe Blank is an action comedy about a professional assassin attending his high school reunion and rekindling an old romance. It’s a great concept that takes the action just as seriously as the humor. John Cusack performs both sides of his cold-blooded character excellently, and he’s aided by a memorable supporting cast comprised of his sister Joan Cusack, Alan Arkin, and Dan Aykroyd among others.

Best movies to watch on HBO

In Short

Grosse Pointe Blank is packed with memorable moments. It has a much deserved cult following; check it out if you’ve never seen it before.

Must-watch movies on HBO

21. The Nice Guys (2016)

Crowe and Gosling discuss the film at Cannes

The Nice Guys is another buddy cop comedy from Shane black, the man who practically invented the subgenre with Lethal Weapon, except this time around they aren’t actually cops, and they actually hate each other. The Nice Guys is absolutely hilarious and makes excellent use of a Russell Crowe X Ryan Gosling duo.

Best movies to watch on HBO

In Short

Don’t let The Nice Guys pass you by. If you loved Kiss Kiss, Bang Bang, you’re sure to enjoy The Nice Guys.

Must-watch movies on HBO

20. John Wick Chapter 3: Parabellum

I know dog fu

The third chapter in the stellar John Wick series delivers on the top-tier action the franchise is known for. This time around, the plot isn’t quite as tight as the previous entries, and though Keanu Reeves still fully delivers on the physicality of the role, his character’s motivations get a little muddled in the second and third acts. Mixing up the gunplay with sword fights, hand to hand, and animal combat keeps the action fresh and inventive. A must watch for fans of action cinema.

Best Movies on HBO

In Short

John Wick Chapter 3 continues the top notch action series with another fast-paced, hard hitting entry.

Must-watch movies on HBO

19. Biutiful (2010)

Javier Bardem reflects on shooting Biutiful

Alejandro González Iñárritu’s last film before Birdman was Biutiful, the story of Uxbal, a man embarking on a personal journey as death looms large over his head. The supernatural component of the story is perhaps a bit jarring and could be integrated into the rest of the narrative more smoothly, but the drama at play is rich. Biutiful is an emotional story that is as capable of being uplifting as it is bleak and disheartening.

Best movies to watch on HBO

In Short

Biutiful is a complex drama helmed by an outstanding performance from Javier Bardem.

PSH brings down the house

Before the Devil Knows You’re Dead was the final film from legendary filmmaker Sidney Lumet, and what a capstone to his impressive filmography. Philip Seymour Hoffman and Ethan Hawk both give astoundly good performances, and that’s not even mentioning that incredible supporting performances from Albert Finney, Marisa Tomei, and Michael Shannon. The unorthodox visual style might not be to everyone’s liking, but this dark thriller is sure to impress in the acting and script departments.

17. Punch-Drunk Love (2002)

Don’t f**k with the mattress man

Paul Thomas Anderson’s romantic drama Punch-Drunk Love grabs you from the intriguing opening frame and never lets go. It’s the director’s shortest film, but it packs a lot into its brisk runtime. Adam Sandler gives an excellent dramatic performance and his romance with Emily Watson is undeniably sweet and heartfelt. It’s a different kind of romance film, one with an angry edge and spontaneous bursts of humor.

Top HBO Movies

In Short

Punch-Drunk Love is another great entry in PT Anderson’s remarkable filmography. Excellent work across the board.

Best HBO Movies

16. Sophie’s Choice (1982)

The iconic titular scene

Meryl Streep turns in a career defining performance in this devastating drama. The only misstep is focusing too much on the less interesting Stingo as the protagonist, though his perspective does make for a compelling, gradual reveal of information about our titular heroin. Kevin Kline also turns in a layered performance as a deeply complicated character that keeps the present day storyline engrossing alongside the heartbreaking flashbacks.

Best movies to watch on HBO

Must-watch movies on HBO

11. Aliens (1986)

Feature-length retrospective documentary

James Cameron’s follow up to the 1979 sci-fi classic is rightly hailed as one of the best sequels ever made. Aliens trades some of the focus on horror of the first film for a larger emphasis on action, while keeping things tense and claustrophobic. This is a sequel that ups the scale and spectacle on all fronts.

Best movies to watch on HBO

In Short

Aliens is a sci-fi classic and a staple of the entire genre. Forget the subsequent sequels and revisit this gem.

Best Movies on HBO Right Now

10. Blindspotting (2018)

Is this an Uber?

Criminally underseen upon its release in 2018. Blindspotting is a heady dramedy about race and identity, and one of the most poignant takes on systemic racism and police brutality you’re likely to find. The two leads Rafael Casal and Daveed Diggs (AKA clipping.) also provided the inventive screenplay that is tailor made to their talents as artists. It’s a modern day tragicomedy of Shakespearean proportions.

Top HBO Movies

In Short

Blindspotting is a remarkable film. It’s hard to believe it’s the first screenplay from this exceedingly talented lead duo.

9. Dragged Across Concrete (2018)

Producer gives a tour of the set

Robbed of its theatrical release due to a dispute with the studio, S. Craig Zahler’s third feature film is a towering testament to his talents as an auteur. Best movies to watch on HBO

Building Fight Club’s CGI

Few films infect the zeitgeist as immediately and fully as David Fincher’s Fight Club.
